The PZDA represents a vibrant community of Docents—volunteer tour guides uniquely skilled in “edu-tainment,” seamlessly blending education and entertainment to advocate for Perth Zoo’s mission in conservation.

When visiting Perth Zoo, Docents can help you plan your day, inform you of special events, share insights on keeper talks, and answer any questions about the animals or global conservation initiatives. Whether you prefer a casual chat or a guided walk around the Zoo, Docents are here to enrich your visit.

Derived from the Latin word docere, meaning “to teach,” Docents are passionate individuals of all ages who excel in creating meaningful visitor experiences.

Through comprehensive training, they remain well-versed in a wide array of topics, ensuring every interaction is engaging and informative.

Docents play a vital role in ensuring visitors enjoy their time at Perth Zoo while gaining valuable knowledge. Their responsibilities include:

  • Conducting Zebra Car Tours and Walking Tours to showcase the Zoo’s diverse attractions.
  • Offering guidance, directions, and detailed information about Perth Zoo’s animals and conservation projects.
  • Greeting visitors upon arrival, distributing maps, assisting with lost property, and providing support for booking tours or hiring lockers.

Docents are much more than animal enthusiasts; they are individuals who genuinely enjoy helping people and inspiring a deeper appreciation for wildlife.

WALKING TOURS

Since 1982, when the first cohort of 27 trainees graduated, Docents have been integral to the Zoo community. Today, PZDA boasts around 300 members, each volunteering a few days each month.

Nowdays, the course is 10 consecutive Saturdays from May to mid July and costs $130.

Although the role is unpaid, it offers plenty of rewards. Docents enjoy a unique working environment, gain knowledge across a wide range of topics, and develop both professional and personal skills. Most importantly, their efforts directly benefit Perth Zoo’s visitors and animals alike.
